We live on this planet just like our clients. We make environmental decisions everyday and sometimes there is a trade-off between being environmentally friendly and greater profit. At The Portables we try and balance the two. Wherever possible we use local building products (to minimize the damage that transporting goods has on the planet), we do not use toxic materials in our building process, we aggressively recycle, we use as much post-consumer materials as possible in our design and build process, and to top it off we recently switched to energy efficient lighting in our 30,000 square foot manufacturing facility.
At The Portables we produce a large amount of graphics for our clients. In the past, once the graphic message became stale, our clients were forced to dispose of them in landfills. The Portables concern for the environment has led to the development of various green policies.
The Portables graphic panels come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they share one common trait – every graphic panel is 100% recyclable. Laminated graphic panels are shredded and the remains used in other post-consumer products. Fabric panels are made from recyclable material that is used as raw materials for various common post-consumer products. All bio-degradable vinyl panels are printed using water-based inks.
Our display hardware has always been 100% recyclable. Made from a combination of aluminum and hard plastics, each component of our display hardware is designed to be 100% recyclable. Our rotationally molded shipping cases can be chipped down to their raw plastic components and turned into products such as park benches.
The Portables millwork and fabrication facility uses local wood products that are manufactured using sustainable forestry practices. Our materials, including laminates, are chosen based on ethical and environmental considerations. Wood is a precious commodity and we understand that there is a right and a wrong way to harvest the wood we all enjoy. By supporting those manufacturers that harvest and manufacture wood raw materials ethically, we hope to promote more companies to adopt these practices.
By experimenting with post-consumer materials instead of first-generation raw materials, we feel that the environmental impact is lessened. To that end, when appropriate The Portables works with corrugated Eco-board. Lightweight yet strong, Eco-board is made of 100% recycled cardboard materials. As a purchaser of post-consumer materials, we provide a market for manufacturers to continue innovating and testing these materials. We also free up landfills by taking materials that would normally end up there and repurposing them. Best of all, no sacrifice is made by our clients in terms of cost, look, longevity, or functionality.
